Our History in Retail

You may have been drinking our coffee for years.  Since 2001 we have been roasting and providing coffee under private label for many farmers market locations.  Our very first retail locations were in San Diego.  A small chain of Grocery Stores called Henry's Market Place.  Henry's was originally called Boney's Markets.  A long standing iconic San Diego market specializing in produce.  Here is where it gets crazy!  Henry's was purchased by Wild Oats Markets.  During this time the Founders of Henry's went to Phoenix Arizona and started Sprouts Farmers Markets in Chandler Arizona.  Volcanic Red Coffees was asked to be the provider for the bulk coffee section.  Our goal was to provide gourmet coffee without the gourmet price.  Both Henry's and Sprouts coffee quickly became recognized as the best coffee in a grocery store chain.   We were providing specialty coffee, hand crafted and drum roasted directly to the stores with no middle man.  This insured the coffee was super fresh and of the highest quality.  Henry's added stores as did Sprouts and in the years to come we grew with the two chains.  As often happens with large companies along came the mergers.  Wild Oats was purchased by Whole Foods and Whole Foods sold the Henry's brand.  And soon after Henry' was merged with Sprouts Farmers Market and all the while we kept providing the best coffee to the growing company.  We worked with many great people at Sprouts and enjoyed a 17 year run servicing the natural foods industry.  People move on and companies change and  in November of 2017 our long relationship with Sprouts ended.  We are now concentrating on many new avenues of growth.  One place you can still get our coffee is our website. We value every customer and every order and you have our promise to give great customer service and great coffee!

I first fell in love with Volcanic Red shopping at my local sprouts while living in Tempe, AZ from 2005-2012 — Snickerdoodle was my favorite! In early 2012 I moved from AZ to Atlanta and was for a short period disappointed not to have Sprouts. Low and behold a short time later Sprouts announced coming to the Atlanta market! Talk about being excited and mainly at the thought of being able to get Volcanic Red again! I am so sad you are no longer the coffee of choice (the brand that replaced you doesn’t hold a candle) for Sprouts yet am very excited to see I can order off your website. :o)

We were also incredibly disappointed that the Volcanic Red coffee was taken out of Sprouts. Your coffee is, by far, the best coffee . My mother in law and I have always enjoyed the French Caramel Cream. We just went down to our local Sprouts today and bought the last 2 5 lb bags they had in the store. We will NOW become direct customers of Volcanic Red and order online. Hopefully you have frequent sales. Haha. You have lifetime customers in us!

One less reason to shop at Sprouts where their coffee sales always brought me out to stock up. Theirs is march away from quality.

I too am incredibly disappointed that Sprouts was dumb enough to stop carrying your amazing coffee. To add insult to injury, their new coffee is abominably terrible. Like as in the worst cup of coffee I’ve had in years. This has prompted me to go on a kind of coffee quest, to find something at least as good as Volcanic Red, which is turning out to be a tall order.

There’s another chain of grocery stores near me, Natural Grocers (Vitamin Cottage), who carried a decent bulk organic coffee section, but then a few months back completely scaled back the number of bins they offered down to only two or three varieties. You guys should reach out to them and try to work out a deal to carry your coffee there. I’ve tried passing that suggestion on to some of their managers, but sometimes I feel like suggestions like that don’t carry too much weight and it’s more something that comes from high up the management chain. Perhaps your connections and history would get them to return your calls? Just a thought.

Very sorry to hear that Sprouts was dumb enough to drop your coffees. I’ve been drinking your Guatemalan Huehuetenango ever since 2006, when I was providing mini biscotti to you with the Sprouts label.

Is there anyone left who remembers Biscotti #4? I don’t know (or want to know) where Judy is, but I’m alive, well and living in San Pedro.

I was very sorry to find that Sprouts was no longer carrying the best coffee ever! I will be ordering online from you now. One request, is it possible to get 2 lb. or so of beans as an option? The flavors I like are only in 5 lbs…a lot for 2 people.
Thanks for making the best coffee and having a way for me to buy it.

I am also disappointed that Sprouts has changed vendors. Midnight Stroller is the most consistent, balanced, flavorful coffee I have ever found for home brew. The Sprouts clerk let me try a replacement that was supposed to be equivalent from their new supplier, but it doesn’t come close. Looks like I’ll be buying online from now on.

I was so sad when our local Sprouts store stopped carrying your coffee.
And I was so happy to see that I could order on line.
Best coffee ever 😁👍
